about our current leaders. there are contrast. senator reed and senator mcconnell did not create the hyper partisan senate. they inherited it, basically. they certainly have not done anything to reverse the situation. instead it has gotten worse. i think senator mcconnell really bears if this special -- the special responsibility. he is the architect and the symbol of a policy of absolute attraction -- obstruction. the structure and began at the beginning -- the obstruction began at the beginning of president obama's presidency. it is utterly impossible for me to conceive of senate leaders that i grew up with being as different as it can be from howard baker or any of the great leaders. i think it is contrary to the way that the senate worked when it worked at its best. the senate is supposed to be the national media aretor. that is a place where the parties come together and reconcile and not inflame differences. it does not work that way at all in the past -- in a long period of time. the frustration i have the senator mcconnell is number one, he deepened the problem. he has dr

the fiscal cliff. some folks think that perhaps senator mcconnell would not negotiate something with senate democrats if he wasn't sure that it was going to pass the house, that it would get by at least some of the republicans who would need to get by to pass. but i think the white house is hoping that he will kind of buck house republicans and agree to work something out so that something can pass the senate. but it's very much up in the air, miguel, and not certain that we are not going over the fiscal cliff at this point. >> sounds like a very dangerous game, a very complicated game of chicken, the highest levels. what is your sense of it? you spent time with the president, know washington well. do you think someone is going to blink? >> you know, if you'd asked me a couple of weeks ago, i would have said i didn't think that the country would go over the fiscal cliff. i think it's very much a possibility at this point. i was sort of surprised that, honestly, a deal wasn't worked out. so i think at this point, too, the white house would have told you behind the scenes that ultimately, a d

income taxes though we do not, and that parity has been so important. leader mitch mcconnell has guided our party and our conference through the past six years. he is a gifted leader and one that i have witnessed time and again has come up with strategies that have gotten things done in the right way. senator jon kyl and i have worked on immigration and death tax relief. senator lamar alexander and i have championed the america competes act so that we would continue the priity of scientific research and that we would never fail to invest in our future because it is the sequel for our economy. i am very pleased that the distguished ranking member of the judiciary committeend the finance committee, finance committee now and judiciary before, is also on the floor and has been a wonderful friend to me, helping me in my very first election when he was the rock star at my fund-raisers in texas. and i thank senator orrin hatch for his long leadership in ts body. and i have had the wonderful good fortune to serve with two colleagues from my home state. first, senator phil gramm, who was a wonde
